How Stephanie Mills stayed on the straight and narrow in Hollywood

Stephanie Mills — who starred as Dorothy in the smash ’70s musical “The Wiz” — says she was surrounded by drugs in showbiz, but credits “not being a follower” to keeping her on the straight and narrow.

“Thank God my mother was around,” she told Page Six. “I was just so glad I never got into drugs. Not to say that it wasn’t around me, because it was… but I [have] never been a follower. No alcohol, none of that none of that whatsoever.”

Mills starred in “The Wiz” from 1976 to 1979.

The “When I Think of Home” singer is now starring in a new Lifetime film, “Pride: A Seven Deadly Sins Story,” with five-time Grammy winner Erica Campbell.

“The subject of the film is pride, and I think there is a sliver of pride that everybody deals with. You can be proud of yourself, but it can get to a place where it’s not just about you,” Mills said of the project.

The 66-year-old adds, “It’s not about what’s mine, it’s about taking your stuff, too. That’s when pride [goes] a little bit too far, and you see that manifesting in different ways in this film. I can’t wait for people to see it. I really hope you get the message more than anything.”
