Hugh Grant Says Nobody “Shags” on Set Anymore, Laments That Everyone “Goes Home and Looks at Twitter”

Veteran rom-com star Hugh Grant appears to know a thing or two about on-set romances.

The Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves actor recently appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert where he spoke about how bonding with one’s co-stars behind the scenes has changed with the introduction of cell phones and social media.

Grant said Chris Pine “occasionally tried” to get their co-stars together for a real Dungeons & Dragons game, but to no avail.

“Films are so weird now,” Grant confided to Colbert. “They’re so weird. In the old days, by the end of the second week you were all getting drunk in the evening, having dinner, falling in love with each other and all that.”

He continued, “All that stopped because of telephones. Everyone goes home and looks at Twitter. It’s so sad.”

“So, if there weren’t telephones on set there would be more affairs going on?” Colbert asked.

Grant confirmed that yes, cellphones on set are getting in the way of an age-old Hollywood tradition: affairs. “You know, [Quentin] Tarantino bans telephones from sets and quite right too, and the people there, they do all shag each other—or so I’m told,” he said.

Colbert appeared surprised at that bit of gossip.

Considering Grant’s decades of working alongside some of the industry’s biggest names, hearing him lament about the good “old days” has us wondering what stories he might have about “getting drunk” and “falling in love” with his own co-stars.

This isn’t the first time Grant’s shown off his risqué sense of humor. Whether he’s on The View or even at the Oscars, where he cracked a NSFW joke on stage, Grant always has a hilarious joke or anecdote to share.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is now playing in theaters.
