I am a "kind" parent and never punish or reward my child

A South London single mother insists she never punishes or rewards her children, and her parenting strategies have proven successful.

Hannah Canavan, 33 raises three children — Esmae, 11, Eila, 9, and Elfie, 7 — in a "gentle" parenting style.

"I never punished or rewarded my child. It works really well for me," she told SWNS.

} Kanavan focuses on the natural consequences of bad decisions and avoids putting undue pressure on good decisions.

Her mother developed her own parenting style after working in a student unit for troubled children.

"If you look at the prison system, you can see that punishment is not working, because in that case there are no second or her third offenders," she explained. Canavan currently works as her home education coach and runs her own school at home to her own children.

"People think that my children must behave badly because I do not punish them, but that is not the case at all. They're not afraid of me because I don't take anything from them," she said.

"They respect me and listen to me because I calmly explain why they shouldn't do something and learn from it."

A mother of three, she never punished her children, no matter how old they were or how bad they behaved.

"If they run out into the street or whatever, my immediate reaction might be to yell 'no,'" she said.

and show them a video about a car accident so they can understand the seriousness of it.

"Nine times out of ten, I would never do it again," insisted Canavan.

She explained that yelling at and punishing children could distract attention from what they had actually done wrong.

Instead, Canavan works to find out the situation and why it happened, but explains to the children why it's wrong.

"Children are children. They don't always behave the way you want them to," she said.

Instead of yelling at them, I remove the child and take it outside and calmly explain that we will not be returning until they know they shouldn't. When she found out about her children, she claimed that people always thought her children were terrible, but believed that her children were "really nice and well-mannered." She said she listens to her and even goes to her when she thinks she's done something wrong.

"I thought Ayla came to me just the other day and broke the table, but she was honest about it," said Canavan.

``They know I am reasonable and always ask permission from me.''

"I am very lucky," she said.

"Of course it's not perfect. We're all on holiday, but we're a close family, and the girls look up to me, but they're not afraid of me either."

Canavan knows that others expect her parenting style to fail or that she will give up, but she intends to stick with it.

"I will never punish them," she said.
