Good news for Paul Mescal fans: the heartthrob from Normal People is starring in a brand new A24 movie, God’s Creatures, which is opening in select U.S. theaters this weekend. But Mescal might not be playing the lovable dude you’ve come to know and love.
Directed by Saela Davis and Anna Rose Holmer, with a screenplay by Shane Crowley, God’s Creatures is a psychological drama that takes place in a small Irish fishing village. Emily Watson stars as Aileen O’Hara, a mother who lies to protect her son, Brian (Mescal), from a serious, potentially life-ruining allegation. As rumors and talk spread, fractures begin to form in this tight-knit, insular community.
Brian O’Hara is certainly no Connell, but that doesn’t mean the girlies won’t line up to see his pretty face. Here’s what you need to know about how to watch God’s Creatures, and when to expect to see God’s Creatures on streaming.
WHERE TO WATCH GOD’S CREATURES:
Right now, the only place to watch God’s Creatures is in a movie theater when the film opens in select theaters in the U.S. on September 30. You can find a showing near you via Fandango. After the film’s theatrical run, you’ll be able to purchase it on digital platforms like iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, YouTube, and Vudu.
WHEN WILL THE 2022 GOD’S CREATURES MOVIE BE STREAMING?
The God’s Creatures digital release date has not yet been announced. It’s hard to say when God’s Creatures, which is an A24 release, will come to digital, but we can make an educated guess based on previous A24 releases.
One recent A24 release, Bodies Bodies Bodies, became available to rent for $19.99 on digital platforms on September 27, 45 days after its wide release. If God’s Creatures follows a similar release strategy, you may be able to rent the movie for $19.99 around mid-to-late November 2022.
That said, some A24 movies have been coming to digital closer to 3 weeks after opening in theaters—while others have been staying in theaters for much longer. We’ll have to wait and see.
WILL GOD’S CREATURES BE ON HBO MAX?
No. God’s Creatures will not be on HBO Max, because Pearl is an A24 film and not a Warner Bros. film. Also, HBO Max will no longer be streaming theatrical movies in 2022. (Last year, Warner Bros. opted to simultaneously release its theatrical slate on streaming, meaning HBO Max subscribers could watch movies like Matrix Resurrections at home. This year, however, Warner Bros. theatrical movies will have a 45-day theaters-only run before moving to HBO Max.) It’s possible that God’s Creatures will be on HBO and HBO Max someday, but it will not be any time soon.
IS GOD’S CREATURES 2022 ON NETFLIX?
No. It’s possible that God’s Creatures will be on Netflix someday, given that the streaming service hosts a number of A24 films, including Uncut Gems. But there’s no guarantee. If you don’t want to miss the film, your best bet is to see God’s Creatures in a movie theater or wait to rent it for $19.99.
