Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a game-winning single with one out in the bottom of the 10th to give the Yankees a 3-2 win over the Padres on Saturday in The Bronx.
DJ LeMahieu, who had a home run and an RBI double earlier in the game, made a nice play to end the top of the 10th, getting Fernando Tatis Jr. on a slow roller to third to strand Ha-Seong Kim.
LeMahieu led off the bottom of the inning by being intentionally walked, and Harrison Bader followed with a bunt that sent automatic runner Greg Allen to third.
Kiner-Falefa followed with a base hit down the third base line to end it.
The Yankees entered having lost three straight — all at home — following a five-game winning streak.
Luis Severino was solid in his second start of the season, allowing just one hit — a homer to Tatis in the fourth — in his 6 ²/₃ innings.
Severino started the game by retiring the first 10 batters before Tatis’ homer tied the game at 1-1. It was a second straight game in The Bronx with a homer for Tatis, who seemingly relishes playing the villain in front of Yankee fans.
The Yankees threatened against Michael Wacha with one out in the bottom of the first with singles by Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo putting runners on the corners for LeMahieu.
LeMahieu doubled down the left field line, scoring Judge, but third base coach Luis Rojas ill-advisedly sent Rizzo, who was thrown out easily.
Harrison Bader struck out to end the inning.
Wacha settled down well after the first. He retired nine straight after LeMahieu’s double before Bader’s two-out single in the fourth. But Bader was then thrown out trying to steal second to end the inning.
The Padres took their first lead in the seventh. Severino got the first two outs of the inning before a walk to Nelson Cruz. Severino’s final pitch sailed to the backstop and he bent over following the pitch, which prompted a quick visit from Aaron Boone.
Severino stayed in the game and got Trent Grisham to ground to second, but Rizzo wandered far to his right without getting to the ball and Gleyber Torres booted it.
That proved to be Severino’s final batter, as Michael King entered and gave up a single to left to Kim to drive in pinch-runner Jose Azocar to give the Padres a 2-1 lead.
LeMahieu, who hadn’t homered since May 11, hit a solo shot out to right-center to tie the game again. It was LeMahieu’s sixth home run of the season.
After Wandy Peralta got the final out of the top of the eighth, Oswaldo Cabrera led off the bottom of the inning with an infield single.
Kyle Higashioka followed with a drive to the track in left-center, but Grisham made the catch.
Anthony Volpe grounded into a double play to end the inning.
