Italian officials say at least six people died on Sunday after a glacier collapse and an avalanche in the northern Italian Alps.

According to the BBC, eight other people were injured during the avalanche, two of whom were seriously injured.

Helicopters and rescuers were sent to the site of the collapse.

"Unfortunately, five people were found dead," paramedic spokesman Michela Canover told AFP, "the number remains tentative." ".
