Jimmy Garoppolo out for season with broken foot in major 49ers injury blow

Jimmy Garoppolo will be out for the season with a broken foot, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan announced.

The San Francisco quarterback suffered the injury after being sacked in the first quarter of the 49ers’ 33-17 win over the Dolphins at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday.

“He’ll be out, he’ll need surgery, broke a few things in there,” Shanahan said postgame.

Backup quarterback Brock Purdy took up the offensive reins. The rookie went 25-for-37 passing with 210 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

Garoppolo dealt with drama with the 49ers during the offseason, with a potential trade request never panning out. The veteran was later slotted behind Trey Lance to start the year before the sophomore got injured in Week 2, also breaking his foot.

Lance is continuing to heal and traveled with the team to Mexico City for their game against the Cardinals on Nov. 21.

“I don’t think he’s running,” Shanahan said of Lance at at the time. “I know he is out of the boot, walking around well. I’m not sure exactly where he is at in that, but he’s not going real hard at it yet.”

Even as Lance recovers, Shanahan doesn’t expect him to be back at any point this season, so the 49ers now appear to be Purdy’s team. His performance gives San Francisco a reason to be optimistic as they head into the final stretch of the season.
