Judge allows Cuomo to keep $5 million earned for writing book during pandemic for now

Cuomo ordered to return millions of dollars in book proceeds

Albany, N.Y.. — Judge Tuesday ordered him to relinquish $5 million paid to writebook 85} spoke of his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic

The Joint Committee on Public Ethics initially approved Cuomo's request to write a book in 2020 titled "America's Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic." Cuomo did not keep his promise not to use state resources on the book.

Cuomo admitted that state officials assisted with tasks such as editing the manuscript. But he said those employees did the work voluntarily in their private time.

The commission, dubbed by the Word, gave Cuomo 30 days and waived $5.1 million paid by the publisher for the book. Cuomo sued, alleging that members of the committee were prejudiced against him and violated his due process rights. Judge Dennis A. Hartman denied the commission's request to enforce the order to turn over the funds to Cuomo. Hartman characterized it as an attempt to circumvent administrative procedures.

Cuomo's fellow Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a bill to dissolve the commission this year in favor of the new commission. It is not clear whether the new commission will continue to try to get money back on Cuomo's books. and if it determines that there has been a violation, the new commission can impose civil penalties for it," Hartman wrote.

Cuomo's attorney Rita Glavin, in her email, called JCOPE's actions "shameful, illegal and a waste of taxpayer funds."

A message was left for the attorney representing the Commission.
