Lightning and Northern Lights Light Up Minnesota's Lake Superior Sky: Video

A solar storm and a lightning-filled storm impacting Earth on Wednesday night

After hearing that the Northern Lights might be visible, John Thane camera in handI went out to take pictures.

"Lake Superior was pretty foggy everywhere, so we went a little further inland," said Tane.

Tane then headed for his Lake of White Pine, but he encountered clouds and a storm along the horizon.

"It was still quite cloudy, but the clouds cleared and there was thunder everywhere," he said.

After about 30 minutes, the fog cleared and the colors of the Northern Lights began to dance across the sky.

"It flared up quite a bit before the moon came up and was washed away," said Tane.

He says he always waits for the chance to see the Northern Lights, but last night was the one he had been waiting for, he said.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Forecasting Center issued a geomagnetic storm warning, expecting the greatest impact in North America on Thursday, although the impact could last for days.

Impacts are expected to remain north of geomagnetic latitude 50 degrees, and NOAA says auroras may be visible as far as Pennsylvania, Iowa, and northern Oregon. I'm here.

The best time to see the Northern Lights is between 11:00 PM and 11:00 PM. and 4 am on Thursday night.
