Mets’ Francisco Alvarez blasts home run for first major league hit

The Mets were chased down by the Braves in the race for the NL East, but the team got a sign of what’s to come from its top prospect on Tuesday night.

Francisco Alvarez, who struggled after being called up by the Mets for last weekend’s series in Atlanta, made his first major league hit a long home run into the second level of the left center field stands at Citi Field in Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Nationals on Tuesday.

Alvarez, 20, hit a 2-2 curveball from Carl Edwards Jr. 439 feet for a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Mets an 8-0 lead. The blast had an exit velocity of 108.9 mph.

The catcher/DH, who hit 27 home runs in the minors this season, had been 0-for-8 with three strikeouts coming into the at-bat. Alvarez followed the home run with a double in his next at-bat.
