Here are some scoops from the Mets’ training day:
Smoking Smith
Drew Smith struck out the side in the eighth inning of the Mets’ 3-2 exhibition loss to the Nationals in West Palm Beach, Fla.
The right-hander Smith has pitched to a 1.50 ERA this spring and will be counted on for important innings in Edwin Diaz’s absence.
Alvarez rut
Francisco Alvarez struck out in both of his at-bats as the DH and is batting .107 this spring without a home run.
Caught my eye
Dennis Santana fired a scoreless sixth inning with one strikeout in his Mets debut.
The right-handed reliever was claimed off waivers from the Twins over the weekend.
Tuesday’s schedule
The Mets are off for the final time before breaking camp next week.
