'Multiple fatalities' reported after two small planes collide mid-air, officials say

"Multiple fatalities" were reported after two small planes collided mid-air at a California airport on Thursday, officials said.

The crash occurred shortly before 3:00 PM. Local time at Watsonville Municipal Airport in Watsonville, an agricultural region located about 50 miles south of San Jose, officials said.

The city of Watsonville said on social media it was attempting to land when two planes collided. "There are reports of multiple deaths," he said.

Santa Cruz The county sheriff's office said it responded to the plane crash on Aviation Way near the airport and secured the scene with the Watsonville Police Department.

"Two planes collided this afternoon and stopped at and near Watsonville Airport. There are now multiple fatalities," said Lt. Patrick Dimmick. "There have been multiple fatalities. The NTSB and FAA have just arrived and secured the airport to conduct an investigation, so nothing else can be confirmed at this time."

The National Transportation Safety Board and An investigation by the FAA is ongoing.
