Netflix is giving us a glimpse into the private lives of two of the world’s most famous people in the teaser for its Harry & Meghan documentary. The minute-long preview, which was released this morning, teases what looks like an intimate portrait of ex-royals Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, who are telling their own story on the streamer for the first time.
The trailer for Harry & Meghan begins with the famous shot of the couple grinning at one another under an umbrella in the rain, while somber piano music plays in the background and a voice asks, “Why did you want to make this documentary?”
As black-and-white photos of Harry and Meghan cycle across the screen, shutters click over the faint piano, and after a few seconds, we hear Harry, who replies, “No one sees what’s happening behind closed doors,” before adding, “I had to do everything I could to protect my family.”
Meghan chimes in too, wondering, “When the stakes are this high, does it make more sense to hear our story from us?” Her rhetorical question closes out the brief teaser, which clocks in at just one minute and 12 seconds.
Netflix hasn’t revealed a premiere date for Harry & Meghan just yet, but promises the documentary is “coming soon.”
When it does finally premiere on Netflix, it will have endured a bit of a rocky road to get there. The streamer chose to push Harry & Meghan‘s release date after an onslaught of criticism over the latest season of The Crown, another Netflix original.
After hearing impassioned objections to The Crown Season 5 — which has been blasted for its portrayal of the royals — Netflix chose to move Harry & Meghan to 2023, after originally planning to debut the doc this December.
“They’re rattled at Netflix, and they blinked first and decided to postpone the documentary,” a source told Deadline in October, explaining that executives at the company thought debuting the documentary so soon after the drama series wasn’t a smart choice.
Regardless of when Harry & Meghan debuts, it’s sure to make waves, as nearly everything the couple touches seems to ignite a media firestorm. While little was known about the series until today, Netflix finally shared some long-awaited info in a release this morning, which promises to show “the other side” of the couple’s “high-profile love story.”
Harry & Meghan, which not only features the royal couple, but also friends, family and historians, comes from director Liz Garbus.
