New Movies On Streaming: ‘M3GAN,’ ‘The Inspection,’ ‘Life Upside Down,’ + More

Whether you’re curious and want to check out a movie about a vicious AI babysitter, or would prefer a moving drama about or an indie dramedy about life during quarantine, there are quite a few new movies on VOD to choose from this week.

Among the new releases now available on streaming are The Inspection, a drama about a gay, Black man who decides to join the Marines after being abandoned by his mother and is without any other community to turn to. Also out now is Life Upside Down, an independent movie about the toll the pandemic can take on already fragile, broken people, directed by Cecilia Miniucchi and starring Bob Odenkirk.

And then there’s M3GAN. In the campy, dark horror movie, Allison Williams stars as Gemma, a roboticist who has developed an AI robot she calls M3GAN which was designed to be a child’s toy and playmate. When Gemma is given custody of her orphaned niece Cady (Violet McGraw), she assigns a M3GAN doll to Cady and the child bonds with the robot. The robot, however, becomes obsessively protective of the child, violently targeting anything or anyone it deems a threat to Cady. Sure, killer dolls aren’t a new idea, but Chucky walked so M3GAN could run.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

The last Bob Odenkirk movie I watched was Nobody, a John Wick-style action movie where he plays a suburban dad whose past as an assassin is revealed after a break-in at his home. Life Upside Down could not be further from Nobody. In this new film, Odenkirk plays an art gallery owner named Jonathan who is disillusioned with his wife and life, and is carrying on an affair when Covid hits and he’s forced into isolation with his family. While Jonathan’s story is front an center, the film also focuses on the way Covid and it’s isolation affected the rest of the people in his orbit, his mistress Clarissa (Radha Mitchell) and his wealthy friend Paul (Danny Huston) as they struggle with the boredom and discomfort that comes with quarantine.

Where to stream Life Upside Down

In The Inspection, Jeremy Pope plays Ellis, a gay, Black man who decides to enlist in the Marines in an effort to give his life meaning. Estranged from his mother (Gabrielle Union), he longs to be accepted somewhere but he’s (obviously) chosen one of the most difficult places in the world to gain that acceptance. The film is a portrait of a man who has to push through the hatred and hostility he faces for being who he is, not just in the military, but by the one person who is supposed to love him unconditionally.
