North Korea fires another ballistic missile toward sea

North Korea shot a ballistic missile toward its eastern waters on Thursday — two days after the hermit kingdom fired an intermediate-range missile over Japan for the first time in five years, South Korea’s military said.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the launch occurred Thursday morning, but no more details were provided, including how far the weapon traveled.

Early Tuesday morning, North Korea launched a missile over Japan, sending residents in parts of the country scrambling for cover before it eventually landed in the Pacific Ocean, Japan’s Ministry of Defense said.

The White House in a statement said President Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida condemned Tuesday’s missile test in the “strongest terms,  recognizing the launch as a danger to the Japanese people, destabilizing to the region, and a clear violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.”

North Korea’s missile tests come after the US ran through military drills with South Korea and Japan, which North Korean leaders believe is a dress rehearsal for an invasion.

After Tuesday’s test, the US, Britain, France, Albania, Norway and Ireland called for a UN Security Council emergency meeting.

North Korea’s Foreign Ministry blasted the drills by the US and its Asian allies Thursday, stating “the Korean People’s Army on South Korea-U.S. joint drills escalating the military tensions on the Korean Peninsula.”

North Korea has held six missile tests over the last two weeks.
