Last year, only one person died in the United States from an unexplained shark attack. This guy was boogie boarding in Morro Bay, CA on Christmas Eve. Researchers from the International Shark Attack File documented 73 unprovoked incidents last year. That's up from his 10-year low of 52 in 2020, but closer to five. The annual global average is 72.

 According to the Shark Attack File, the odds of dying from a shark attack are 1 in 3.7 million. Humans are more likely to be killed by bees and cows than by sharks, according to data compiled by the conservation group Defenders of Wildlife.

Experts said the increase in shark sightings and attacks this yearshows that conservation efforts are working overfishing and pollution.
