Photographers take free photos of terminally ill pets: 'Pictures that capture my love'

Photographer captures pet's final moments

The bond we share Being with our pets is unlike any other. A woman who knows pain started helping others in a special way by taking pictures of her terminally ill pet. 

Photographer Lauren Smith Kennedy taking pictures for free. This is to help pet owners deal with the grief nearing the end of a relationship. 

"You want to capture that final moment," she told her CBS News. "Whether they are happy or sad, because it captures true love just by what they are."

Her first photo was of her four-year-old cancer dog, Lacey. After she posted them online, she said she got an unexpected response. 

"From California, from out of state, from Canada, my whole family asked if they could travel to me or fly. They can do this," said Maine-based Kennedy. "So the outreach has been absolutely incredible." }

To meet the demand, Kennedy created a website listing the names of photographers who could offer the same service. It's called The Tilly Project, named after the cat Kennedy loved and lost. 

"I understand your grief," she said. "That heartbreaking, deadly, truly earth-shaking grief."

For the animals we love, said Kennedy, photography is a gift that celebrates unbreakable bonds. 

"Looking back, 'I was completely heartbroken. But that was what captured my love!'" she said. .
