Police officer, man with assault-style weapons deadly shot in Detroit

Detroit police officers were killed by a man with assault-type weapons, department officials said.

A five-year veterinary officer, whose identity was not immediately revealed, was beaten Wednesday night in response to a call for fire fired on the west side of the city. Detroit Police Chief James Whitetold reporters.

"I lost my hero today," White said. "The department and the city are sad."

The policeman's father recently retired as a Detroit policeman, Mr White said. The chief said the violence against US officers was out of control.

"The violence in this country is ridiculous," White continued. "Attack on police officers is outrageous, and tonight we lost a hero in our department."

White said his community paid the "ultimate sacrifice" to protect the fallen officer.

"And the officers are doing it right after this call," the chief said. "Sufficient ... this didn't have to happen."

It was particularly difficult to inform the officer's family, White said.

"They are sorrowful and their souls are crushed," he said. "This is the worst day of their life. And dad never comes home, husband doesn't come home, and it's unacceptable, it's absolutely unacceptable."

Mayor Mike Dagan repeats White's view of the violence that plagues Detroit. After blaming the amount.

"The meaningless violence that hits our country has come too close to our house tonight," Dagansaid in his statement. "We are grateful to the fallen officer and can never repay him. He has dedicated his life to serve his city and keep his fellow Detroit safe."

No other injuries were reported in the shootings that occurred after the suspect began firing "assault-style rifles," a Detroit police spokesman told the post earlier Thursday. Investigation is in progress.
