Sharks attack lifeguards during training off the coast of Long Island

Two Long Island beaches were closed on Sunday after a shark attacked a lifeguard during training, officials said. Told. Officials said the lifeguard was rushed to the hospital and was stitched there, CBS New Yorkreports.

The attack took place at Smithpoint Beach at around 10:15 am, said Steve Belone, a senior in Suffolk County, adding that the lifeguards were "very well."

"I am very grateful that he is doing well. I talked to him just a short time ago," Belone said at a press conference on Sunday. "This has never happened. Hopefully it will never happen again."

Lifeguard Verone said he was acting as a victim during training when the shark bit him with his chest and hands.

"If you encounter a shark, this is probably the best scenario you can have," Verone said, and lifeguards receive immediate treatment from other officials already engaged in training. He added that he received it. "This has never happened. I hope it never happens again."

Belone said a shark was witnessed shortly after the attack, which was a lifeguard. It was unclear if it was the same shark in the case.

Both Smith Point and Cupsorg beaches are banned from swimming, but will resume on Monday, CBS New York reports.
