Showtime Reportedly Cancels ‘Dexter: New Blood’ Season 2

A long, long time ago The Big Bang Theory spurred off into a spin-off series following one of the beloved leads, Sheldon Cooper. This was appropriately named Young Sheldon. Shortly after came Young Rock, which is a comedic take on wrestler-turned-actor Dwanye Johnson’s upbringing. Now, it looks like we may get a Young Dexter, which is said to follow the popular serial killer through his adolescent years.

It was reported yesterday by TVLine that the acclaimed reboot Dexter: New Blood has been canceled at Showtime and therefore will not be moving forward with Season 2. But, there’s a silver lining: in its place, Showtime, which recently announced its merger with Paramount+, will consider “new iterations” of the show, including a prequel that follows a young version of the popular character.

TVLine reported, “the network is far from done with the Dexter franchise.”

The cancellation of the reboot came as a surprise to many as the series was well-received by critics and audiences and averaged roughly 8 million weekly viewers across platforms, becoming Showtime’s most-watched series.

Many tuned in to revisit the famous anti-hero after the botched ending of the original series, notoriously recognized as one of the most hated television finales of all time.

Decider’s Jade Budowski wrote in their Dexter: New Blood review, “When a series finale is as bad as Dexter‘s was, it’s hard to imagine that series ever getting the chance to redeem itself,” before adding that the new episodes are “pretty compelling stuff.” They added, “Thanks to Michael C. Hall’s masterful ability to slip back into his most famous role, this new iteration gets under your skin quickly.”

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end – including Hall’s run as the prolific killer. Who knows, maybe if the new series is greenlit, he’ll make cameos in flashbacks, as the show has done in the past.

Decider has reached out to Showtime for comment, but did not hear back by time of publication.
