Starling Marte remains Mets playoff question mark after drill doesn’t go well

Starling Marte attempted to hit short soft toss with two hands, but the drill didn’t go well for the outfielder, according to manager Buck Showalter.

Marte, who has missed the past month with a fractured right middle finger, remains a huge question mark for the Mets as they look to configure a postseason roster.

“I know that we’re looking more now about ways to manage it and the discomfort,” Showalter said. “The earliest he would play would be Friday, so we will see what the next three days bring.”

Carlos Carrasco and Taijuan Walker, in some order, will be the Mets’ starting pitchers for the doubleheader against Washington on Tuesday. The Nationals are expected to pitch Cory Abbott and Paolo Espino in some order.

Eduardo Escobar was named National League Player of the Month for September. The veteran infielder produced at a .340/.393/.649 clip with eight homers and 24 RBIs for the month. Escobar had struggled for much of the season, but has thrived since returning from the injured list on Aug. 27.

“It’s one of those things where there’s more than the physical part of it,” Showalter said. “He got into a good place I think mentally and emotionally and I know he did some things mechanically. He’s more upright and found something that clicked. What comes first, the chicken or the egg?”

Single-game tickets for the postseason at Citi Field will go on sale Tuesday at 10 a.m. Fans can access the sale by visiting Mets.com/postseason. Tickets for potential wild-card games, the NLDS and NLCS will be sold.
