'The Office' nearly fired Michael Scott in season 7

The office changed completely when the show said goodbye to Steve Carell in the season 7 finale.

Carell, who played Michael Scott (aka World's Greatest Boss) for his six years, was also the show's lead off-screen. His departure was a huge loss for fans of the series, his castmates, and workplace comedies, but at least his farewell episode "Goodbye, Michael" offered a heartfelt send-off and hoped his character would find a happy ending.

Michael leaves Scranton for love and moves to Colorado to live with his fiancé, Holly Flax (Amy Ryan). However, on the August 17 episode ofOffice Ladies The Office of Stitcher, hosted by Jenna Fisher and Angela Kinsey. Re-listen to the podcast you want. A former co-star revealed that a darker ending was being considered for Michael. I knew it was going to happen, but the news was officially announced over the summer break and there was a lot of opinion about it," Fisher said. "Most people said that theofficewould have been dead without Steve." Explaining that they were discussing plans for the final season, the big question they tried to answer was, "Why did Michael leave Dunder Mifflin?"

"Paul Lieberstein said one of the things they talked about was Michael getting fired at the end," Fisher said. I set this up a little bit in the matter of he became something of a spokesperson, so there was an argument that maybe it all fell apart and he would have to leave.

"Yeah, he's going to be Saber's Fall Guy," Kinsey added. I chose an ending that didn't tarnish that legacy.

"In the end, they thought Michael Scott was doing it wrong," Fisher continued. "They decided they really wanted him to grow. They wanted him to find love. They wanted him to say a really positive and symbolic goodbye."

After watching the DVD commentary for the season 7 premiere "Nepotism", Kinsey further elaborated on Michael's plans for the final season.

"[The writer] shared that this episode was the catalyst for Michael's change because his co-workers were his family and he was an actual nephew, his actual nephew." Because I brought my family into the office, it's about separating work from my family," she explained. "They also said they just wanted to show Michael's growth as a person."

Good choice,Office Writer. I don't know if the fans have forgiven Michael Scott for firing him. Hear stories of final season planning and behind-the-scenes "nepotism."
