‘The View’: Joy Behar Admits to Saying “Awful” Things After People Die

Things took a turn on this morning’s episode of The View as one Hot Topics segment about public divorce announcements somehow became a conversation about the admittedly uncomfortable things Joy Behar says when someone dies.

While the ladies weighed in with their thoughts on announcing divorces via social media only days after Reese Witherspoon did just that, Sunny Hostin remembered a time her friend threw a “‘tell her friends she’s getting divorced’ party.” She added that the “repressed Catholic” in her tried to convince her friend not to get a divorce — something she still hasn’t lived down.

“I shouldn’t have said anything but you invited me to the divorce announcement party and so I thought you wanted feedback,” Hostin joked, before Behar admitted to always saying “stupid things” after people have died.

When Sara Haines attempted to get Behar — who covered her mouth and gasped following her revelation — to clarify, she replied, “Oh, I can’t even. It’s so awful.” But in classic Behar fashion, she continued regardless.

“When somebody’s mother died, right? I said, ‘Well, when your father dies, it won’t be that bad,'” the comedian revealed, to which Haines asked, “And what you meant was, they’ll be together?”

Although Behar said she didn’t know what she meant and that she was coming from a good place, she added, “Another time I said, ‘Well, both of them are dead, so now you’re next.’ But I sincerely was trying to be good to them — helpful.”

As a result of the insensitive remarks, Behar said she’s since “learned” as both friends “turned” on her. She told the panel, “I will now be nice about it and say, ‘Oh, I’m very sorry.’ And that’s all you say. I’m very sorry for your loss.”

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
