He tried to smooch the snake — and nearly got the hiss of death.
An Indian snake handler’s attempt to kiss a cobra backfired terribly after the serpent returned the favor — and bit him on the lips. A video of the venomous saliva swap is currently causing facepalms across the web.
“It is really sad state of affairs to see such silly things being done which could be fatal in many ways,” an eyewitness told Jam Press of the Darwin Award-worthy incident, which occurred October 1 in Bhadravathi, Karnataka, India.
The handler, who has not been identified, had reportedly just rescued the snake when he decided to attempt his ill-fated interspecies smooch. It’s yet unclear what inspired snake man, with many years of experience with snakes, to partake in the foolhardy feat.
In the aforementioned clip, the impromptu charmer can be seen holding the venomous reptile from behind while kissing it on the back of its head, which has its hood flared out in a threatening display.
However, his makeout sesh goes south after the cobra whips around in a flash and bites the man on the smackers, causing onlookers to cry out in shock.
The snake then flees the scene as bystanders try frantically to wrangle it. At the end of the clip, the cobra can be seen trying to wrap itself around a motorbike wheel.
Following the bite, the handler was rushed to the hospital, where he is reportedly in stable condition.
“Hopefully he will be fine soon,” said the aforementioned eyewitness.
The man should thank his lucky stars he’s okay as certain species of cobra in India pack enough venom to kill 10 people.
Meanwhile, approximately 1.2 million people have been killed by snake bites in the country in the last two decades.
