Twitter Blasts ‘Great British Baking Show’ for Mexican Week Episode: “Never Touch Our Food Ever Again”

Great British Baking Show viewers are incensed over the series’ latest episode in which competitors face off during “Mexican Week.” The episode, which airs in the US tomorrow (Oct. 7), sees the amateur bakers trying their hands at dishes including pan dulce, tacos and tres leches cake.

Before the show premiered its latest episode on Netflix, it promoted “Mexican Week” on social media, where it previewed a questionable joked between co-hosts Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas, which predictably didn’t go over too well with the internet.

In the bit, Fielding says, “I don’t feel like we should make Mexican jokes because people will get upset,” to which Lucas replies, “What, not even Juan?”

Fielding says, “Not even Juan.”

One Twitter user slammed the show for its joke, writing in the comments of the post, “None of this is funny. Not the joke, not the outfits. If we’re supposed to be excited that you’re highlighting Mexican baking… You’ve failed. I’m dreading this instead.”

Another added, “Big thumbs down 👎🏽 y’all? Whatever producer/writer pushed this along maybe needs to have a side discussion. This passed through too many executives to get air. Huge huge miss.”

While The Great British Baking Show bungled its promo for “Mexican Week,” the content in the actual episode is pretty cringe-worthy, too. NPR reports that the episode features “various Spanish mispronunciations, maraca-playing, conversations about tequila and a cake donning a mustache.”

Yikes.

Twitter had plenty to say about “Mexican Week,” with most critics wondering why the British program was attempting to tackle Mexican dishes.

“Now who the hell thought to have a Mexican week on great British bake off omfg?,” one asked, while another wrote, “It makes sense that the Great British Bake Off is doing their Mexican week before Halloween because what is scarier than British people attempting to make Mexican food?”

Seeing the Mexican week bake off tweets, I feel people need to know that British people on average know fuck all about mexico beyond media stereotypes. tbh most Brits probably haven't even met a Mexican. There's not like strong anti Mexican sentiment here just pure ignorance.

Sins committed by #GBBO Mexican week (so far):
1. Peeling avocados like an orange.
2.Making “refried beans” from a tin.

4. Pronouncing ‘ll’ as singular l’s
