Typhoon Chaba weakens, but rain continues

Typhoon Chaba weakened to a tropical cyclone on Monday, but more in the central and eastern parts of the country in the coming days, according to Chinese forecasters. It is expected to rain heavily.

Chaba's eyes were in the southern part of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as of Monday morning, moving to Hubei and Hubei provinces at speeds of 10 to 15 kilometers per hour, Chinese officials said.

At the end of Sunday, China's Central Meteorological Observatory lifted the blue warning of the typhoon as Chaba was downgraded.

According to the Astronomical Observatory, heavy rains and strong winds are expected in Guangdong, Guangxi, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Henan and Shandong from Monday to Wednesday.

Typhoon Chaba struck Hong Kong on Saturday afternoon with strong winds and heavy rains, uprooting buildings and trees, and then landed in southern China.

Observatory warned that more extreme weather, including floods, is expected in the southern regions of the country until August.

Heavy rains and floods are not uncommon for China, but forecasters say they have partially condemned the increasing frequency of climate-changing storms.
