Under the British political system, only conservative members of the parliament have the authority to dismiss a sitting conservative prime minister between elections.
So what happens to the British government when the Prime Minister resigns? And how will new leaders be elected?
Will Johnson's resignation trigger a general election?
No. It begins the Conservative Party process for choosing a new leader for the party.
The British Prime Minister is not directly elected by the public. Johnson is the prime minister because he is the head of the largest party in the Commons' house.
Even if Johnson resigns, the conservatives are still the largest party, so the party's new chief will be the prime minister.
How will the new Conservative leader be chosen?
Leadership candidates require the support of at least eight legislators.
If there are three or more candidates, Conservative lawmakers repeat the round of voting to reduce the number of leadership candidates to two.
Next, Conservatives across the country will vote (by mail) between the two finalists.
The winner will be the leader of the party and the prime minister.
Who is the Prime Minister while all this is happening?
Johnson. He will remain the caretaker's prime minister until his successor is elected.
Then he submits his resignation directly to the Queen.
The Palace officially announces that Queen Elizabeth II has accepted Johnson's resignation and announces the person invited by the Prime Minister to replace Johnson. This is formal.
Does the new Prime Minister need to convene a general election?
No. The UK has no plans for the next general election until December 2024.
The new Prime Minister can ask Congress to vote for the early elections, but it does not have to.
