‘Yellowstone’ Season 5 Episode 5 Preview Teases Danger for the Duttons and an Unholy Alliance

Yellowstone‘s latest episode, “Horses in Heaven,” was Season 5’s most eventful hour yet.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

It’s clear that John Dutton (Kevin Costner) is about to come under fire for eliminating hundreds of jobs when he killed the airport project. Plus, officials want answers about the death of the Yellowstone National Park wolves, so he got Summer Higgins (Piper Perabo) out on a six-month supervised release to assist him in a sort of environmental advisor capacity. Oh, and did we mention she’s living on the ranch? Beth will be thrilled.

Meanwhile, Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) laid their son to rest, and Kayce essentially resigned as Livestock Commissioner. Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Jamie (Wes Bentley) had a major blowout after Jamie bailed her out of jail and she learned he has a son. And though Jamie and Sarah (Dawn Olivieri) finally hooked up, Beth is doing her best to stay one step ahead of them.

While we impatiently await Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 5, let’s break down the episode preview frame by frame, shall we? Warning, there will be spoilers ahead!

What’s In The Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 5 Preview?

Next time on Yellowstone, we’ll flash back to young John Dutton (Josh Lucas) riding a horse on the ranch with the bunkhouse boys from back in the day. While he’s leading the group, a Kevin Costner voiceover delivers the following familiar words: “First Duttons to settle this valley, fighting was all they knew.” We catch another glimpse of present-day John Dutton sharing that wisdom with Rip, which we also saw in the Yellowstone Season 5 preview released after the premiere.

We cut to Beth and John sitting outside the ranch. Beth tells him, “She is not gonna help you, dad. You have invited your worst enemy to sleep in your bed.” We see Summer standing on the ranch, and John shoots Rip a concerned glance, so we assume Beth was warning her dad about Summer.

Next, Sarah walks into Jamie’s office. With a serious face, she tells him, “Market Equities or its partners, we can do whatever we want.” Before we can read too much into the confusing look on Jamie’s face, it’s back to Beth and John, where Beth’s delivering yet another warning to her dear old dad. “They want the land, dad,” she assures him. “That is all that you need to understand.”

In a callback to the opening voiceover, John tells Rip, “Cowards rule these days, Rip. It’s time we show them what we do and how we do it.” The closing shot of the Episode 5 preview shows a present-day John Dutton on horseback, leading those from the bunkhouse (also on horseback) in the dark.

Where Should I Pause the Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 5 Preview?

Yellowstone previews excel at holding our interest without revealing major storylines, and the Season 5, Episode 5 preview is no different. Though we’re still fuzzy on the details, here are a few specific moments worth your attention.

  • Beth has her eyes on Summer: It’s no secret that Beth and Summer didn’t hit it off in Season 4, and Beth is technically the reason Summer was locked up in the first place. So we can’t imagine Summer’s return to the Dutton Ranch will fill either of them with too much joy. For now, we can assume Beth’s “She is not gonna help you, dad. You have invited your worst enemy to sleep in your bed.” warning was about Summer. So will John Dutton’s soft spot for the environmental activist wind up working against him and the ranch?
  • What’s the deal with Sarah and Jamie? In Season 5, Episode 4, we saw Sarah and Jamie finally hook up. And Beth saw them, too. Uh oh! When Sarah walks into Jamie’s office in the Episode 5 preview and says, “Market Equities or its partners, we can do whatever we want,” does Jamie look completely onboard, scared for his life, or both? Only time will tell.
  • The “fighting was all they knew” callback: This one John Dutton line keeps popping up in previews, so you know it’s important. In Season 5, Episode 3, we saw young John Dutton once again dealing with a wolf problem on the ranch. So the opening and closing scenes in Episode 5’s preview are worth a second glance. The mirroring shots of John on horseback leading the bunkhouse workers give us the sense that history is about to repeat itself. “First Duttons to settle this valley, fighting was all they knew,” John says, bracing for another fight. “Cowards rule these days, Rip. It’s time we show them what we do and how we do it.”
