Zach Wilson catches touchdown on Jets trick play in return from injury

The Jets reached into their bag of tricks on Sunday to get their first touchdown of the day against the Steelers.

As the second quarter got underway in Pittsburgh, quarterback Zach Wilson caught a touchdown pass from wide receiver Braxton Berrios to give the Jets a two-score lead. Wilson, making his first start for the Jets since undergoing knee surgery in August, then celebrated in style in the end zone, where he was joined by his teammates.

The Jets led the Steelers 10-6 at halftime.

Wilson, the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, missed the first three games of the season with a torn meniscus and bone bruise, stemming from a preseason game against the Eagles. The 23-year-old quarterback was cleared to play Sunday.

“It’s cool, it’s just cool for him,” Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur said of Wilson earlier this week. “Whether it’s Zach or anyone that’s missed time because of injury, you just want to see them on the grass. So, he gets to be out there, he put in a lot of work to put himself in this position to get back. I don’t think anyone really knew after the injury, particularly right when it happened, what was going to happen and how long he was going to be out.”

Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco took on the starting job for the Jets’ first three games of the season, including a stunning Week 2 victory over the Browns.
