Sokolov, 63, a prominent Russian university professor and historian, attempted to commit suicide while being detained after confessing to killing and then identifying his girlfriend Anastasia Yeshchenko, 24, his lawyer. Sokolov said November 19.
After going down with his 39-year-old girlfriend in Saint Petersburg earlier this month, he tried to mourn Yeshchenko’s body parts, down the river in the city.
Sokolov, who is in custody, attempted to commit suicide on November 15 when investigators took him to the apartment in which the incident occurred in order to ask the suspect to reproduce the murder, lawyer Alexander Pochuyev said. .
"He announced his intention to commit suicide in the first place and he did so immediately after," Mr. Pochuyev said. The action was stopped by police while the suspect was described as "in a difficult psychological phase". Mr. Pochuyev declined to provide further details.
The investigation committee and the prison where the Russian professor was held were also declined to comment when AFP asked about the incident.
On November 15, investigators also took the suspect to the riverbank where parts of Yeshchenko’s bodies were discovered. Russian professors are wearing bulletproof vests and helmets.
The murder stunned Russian public opinion after allegations that Sokolov was in the wrong with his students in the past and requested the administration of Saint Petersburg University, where he work, conduct investigations.
Yeshchenko was described by her friends as an excellent student and had an affair with a man nearly 40 years older than her for a few years. She has collaborated with him on several research projects.
Mr. Sokolov was suspected of shooting his lover when they fought and then proceeded to divide the young lover into parts. The remains of the ill-fated girl were buried in their home town in a southern province of Russia over the weekend. Hundreds of people came to see Yeshchenko off.
