Antigua and Barbuda and Tuvalu Pursue Climate Action at ITLOS

ITLOS Courtroom

Antigua and Barbuda, alongside Tuvalu, is pursuing a landmark legal battle at the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg, Germany.

Their objective is to obtain an Advisory Opinion regarding states’ obligations in combating pollution linked to climate change and its profound marine consequences, such as rising ocean temperatures and sea-level rise.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne revealed this move at the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing the urgent need for action in the face of climate change.

He also highlighted the creation of the Commission of Small Island States on Climate Change and International Law (COSIS), a collective effort with other small island nations to address this pressing global concern.
