Crystal Shantal Hamilton, a Jamaican national who arrived in Antigua in February last year, has been fined for breaching Antigua and Barbuda’s immigration laws.
Court records show that Hamilton applied for and received two extensions, with the last one expiring on January 15 this year.
Despite being advised that she must leave the country upon the second extension, she failed to do so but instead presented herself to the Extension Unit at the Immigration Department last Friday.
Upon examination of her passport, it was discovered that she had tampered with the original stamp, changing the expiry date from January to September 15, 2023.
Hamilton was arrested and charged with uttering a falsified permit, falsifying a permit, and remaining in the state illegally.
She pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay $10,000 within 14 days or serve six months in prison.
Additionally, she was fined $4,000 for remaining in the state illegally, to be paid within 14 days or serve four months in prison.
The default sentences will run concurrently.
