Commissioner Atlee Rodney had proposed amending the laws to allow for limited states of emergency in specific situations, which the Cabinet rejected, citing the country’s small size and relative peace compared to neighboring nations.
While crime rates have remained lower than in other Caribbean countries, recent spikes in violence have raised concerns.
Henry suggests alternative measures like widespread surveillance cameras and increased stop-and-search operations to address the rising criminal activity instead of resorting to a state of emergency.
