Tomlinson’s Cemetery, Antigua’s newest public burial ground, is gearing up for its first interment, with fences already in place along the Sir Sydney Walling Highway.
The cemetery addresses overcrowding issues in existing burial sites.
Ambassador Lionel Hurst, Chief of Staff in the Prime Minister’s Office, outlined changes to cemetery management, including a flatter landscape for easier maintenance and revised pricing for burial plots, which he acknowledged would be slightly more expensive than the previous $31 cost.
The cemetery, three times the size of the current one, is expected to serve the community for an extended period, promoting inclusivity and breaking down past class barriers that existed in burials.
The historical St. John’s Public Cemetery, consecrated in 1889, had previously excluded the poor from interment.
