Hurricane Lee Continues to Gain Strength in Atlantic

NHC – Hurricane Lee, currently located at 16.4 degrees North and 50.0 degrees West, is rapidly gaining strength in the Atlantic.

As of 1100 AM AST (1500 UTC), Lee boasts maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (165 km/h) with higher gusts.

This powerful hurricane is moving west-northwest at 15 mph (24 km/h), expected to maintain this course through Friday before slowing down over the weekend.

The core of Lee is projected to pass north of the northern Leeward Islands in the coming days.

Lee is on the cusp of becoming a major hurricane, with rapid intensification anticipated today. It is expected to remain a formidable major hurricane throughout the weekend.

While there are no coastal watches or warnings currently in effect, interests in the northern Leeward Islands are advised to closely monitor Lee’s progress.

Hazards affecting land include life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

Swells generated by Lee are forecast to reach the Lesser Antilles on Friday and subsequently impact the British and U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, the Bahamas, and Bermuda over the weekend.
