Gov’t salary or gov’t pension, but not both, Symister says, amidst court-officer controversy

Symister

REAL NEWS – Leon Chaku Symister, an attorney-at-law and the United Progressive Party (UPP) spokesperson on legal matters, says it is unlawful for a person to receive a government pension while earning a government salary.

But, according to complaints in legal circles, there is a judicial officer who is benefitting from both a pension and salary.

In addition, the critics allege, this person is acting in other public- service positions and being paid to function there, as well – reportedly cashing in on four government cheques a month.

Under the laws of Antigua and Barbuda, Symister says, an individual receiving a government pension cannot also be paid from the public purse.

Rather, a person would have to choose which position he or she prefers.

Symister says this was the experience of a client who was told to do so before the decision was made for him.
