Million-Dollar Debt Prompts Government to Use Public Works Personnel for School Security

Antigua’s government aims to reduce costs by deploying trained Public Works personnel as security staff for schools and public buildings, owing to a million-dollar debt to a private security firm.

Monitored cameras will also be installed at various facilities for added protection.

Information Minister Melford Nicholas highlighted the need to manage security expenses more efficiently, as many security contracts are outsourced.

A meeting with lawyers from the Ministry of Legal Affairs confirmed the legitimacy of the outstanding bill.

The move to use Public Works staff comes after several security concerns were raised, including break-ins at school compounds and an armed intrusion at Clare Hall Secondary School.
