Lions Club International has appointed Dr. Sol Yam, the president of Lions Club Belize, as the regional leader for the Caribbean and Latin America.

Dr. Yam, who has been an active member of the Lions Club for four years, also holds the position of disciplinary vice-principal at Saint John’s College (SJC), high school division.

The honor was bestowed upon Dr. Yam, who holds a doctorate degree in leadership, by Lions Club International president, Dr. Patti Hill, under the recommendation of the International Director & Statutory Area Leader for Paraguay, Efren Ginard.

Founded in 1917 in Chicago, Illinois, by Melvin Jones, Lions Club is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, boasting one million members across 200 countries, with 165 members residing in Belize.

The club’s core values, reflected in its acronym “LIONS”: Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation’s Safety, underscore its commitment to five specific global causes: vision, hunger, the environment, childhood cancer, and diabetes. Their goal is to make a positive impact on as many people as possible through various humanitarian initiatives.

Notably, Lions Club played a crucial role in post-hurricane relief efforts, providing aid to many in need throughout Belize City after Hurricane Lisa in 2022, with a generous contribution of over $10,000. The organization is also currently extending its support by offering shelter in the form of hostels for those in need, and contributing to the construction of businesses throughout the city.

“It’s an honor and privilege to be a voice for the underprivileged,” Dr. Yam enthusiastically shared with Amandala. She also highlighted that it is something she was anticipating, and though there are possible challenges awaiting her, she is more than ready.
