Opposition Leader Criticizes B.P.D. for Orange Walk Fatality

Earlier today, Opposition Leader Shyne Barrow also weighed in on the officer involved incident in Orange Walk Town that resulted in the death of twenty-year-old Jesus Sacul. While the tragic episode, another deadly encounter involving police in that municipality, is being investigated, Barrow decries the manner in which the situation was handled by law enforcement.

“It, again, speaks of the poor leadership of the Belize Police Department under the minister because everything starts and stops at the top with the executive. There is a problem in the ministry, this is not the first such incident. We had an incident in Orange Walk a few months ago where a teen was gunned down unnecessarily so, excessive use of force. And while we must hold the individual officers accountable, I believe the police officers are only as good as their leadership, and so you have a commissioner that, he’s a defense attorney so he makes excuses for everything. And you have a Minister of Police that is in over his head and has no reasonable solutions, has implemented no such solutions.”
