Bangladesh Women’s team fare better in 44th Chess Olympiad

Bangladesh Women's chess team beat South Africa 3.5-0.5 while the Men's team lost 1.5-2.5 against Indonesia in the final and 11th round of the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai on Tuesday.

With their sixth victory in 11 matches, the women's team finished 56th among 157 teams with 12 points as they got a 16-pace bump compared to their 72nd-place finish among 151 teams in the last edition.

In the 11th round matches, the game between Sharmin Sultana and Van Zyl Charlize ended in a stalemate but Noashin Anjum, Jannatul Ferdous and Nazrana Khan Eva beat Badenhorst Chloe, Selkirk Rebecca and Bouah Denise, respectively.

Meanwhile, in the open section, producing better results than last edition's 56th-place finish was a distant dream for Bangladesh, especially after losing their last and final match against Indonesia. They finished 66th among 183 teams with 12 points from 11 matches.  

GM Enamul Hossain and GM Megaranto Susanto's game ended in a stalemate while GM Ziaur Rahman beat GM Priasmoro Novendra. However, FM Tahsin Tajwar Zia and FM Mehdi Hasan Parag lost to IM Ervan Mohamad and FM Kurniawan Muhamad, respectively, as Bangladesh Men's team had to stay content with a 66th-place finish.

Uzbekistan became champions with 19 points in the open section followed by Armenia (19 points), India-2 (18 points), India (17 points) and the USA (17 points) while Ukraine emerged champions in the women's section with 18 points followed by Georgia (18 points), India (17 points), USA (17 points) and Kazakhstan (17 points).
