Language hero, journalist Ronesh Maitra’s last rites held

Funeral of EkusheyPadak winner journalist Ronesh Maitra, also the language hero and key organiser of Liberation War movement, was held with the state honours amidst love and respect of the people in Pabna this afternoon (September 30, 2022).

Journalist Ronesh Maitra passed away due to his old age complication on Monday in a private hospital in Dhaka. Later his body was kept in the hospital mortuary for the arrival of his son and daughter from aboard.

The family members, relatives, and well-wishers gathered at his house to pay last respects to him after his body reached his Beltola Road house this noon, reports our Pabna correspondent.

The body of the legendary left leaning politician was also taken at the Pabna Rafikul Islam Bokul Independence Square around 2:00pm where people from all walks of life paid tribute to him with flowers.

Deputy Speaker Advocate Shamsul Haque Tuku and lawmaker of Pabna-5 constituency Golam Faruk Khandaker Prince, among others, paid their last respects to language movement veteran.

He was also given a guard of honour after his body was taken to Pabna.

The body was also taken to Pabna Press club where his colleagues and journalists paid tribute to him.

Born on October, 4 in 1933, Ranesh Maitra started his political career since his student life during the language movement. He was the key organiser of Bangladesh Chhatra Union. Later he joined NAP and Gonoforum. He worked with Oikya NAP before death.

Working in journalism in the last seven decades, Ranesh Maitra joined the Daily Star in 1993 as Pabna correspondent and continued till 2000.
