Prophet remarks: 2 cops injured in attack from protestors in Mohammadpur

Two police officers, including the officer-in-charge (OC) of Mohammadpur Police Station, were injured in an attack from a procession organised to protest suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma's derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The injured, OC Abul Kalam Azad and Assistant Sub-Inspector Jahangir Alam, are now undergoing treatment at National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Dhaka's Agargaon.

Kamruzzaman, inspector (Investigation) of Mohammadpur Police Station, said a group of demonstrators blocked Dhaka Udyan and were holding a rally protesting the offensive remarks against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

"OC Abul Kalam Azad requested the group to finish the programme as early as possible due to severe gridlock created due to the rally," said the inspector.

Immediately after his request, a group of young men from the rally attacked the police, leaving the OC and ASI injured, the police officer said.

Legal steps are underway in connection with the incident, he added.
