SC upholds Samrat’s bail cancellation order

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today (August 10, 2022) upheld a High Court order that cancelled the bail granted to expelled Jubo League leader Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat in a corruption case.

Samrat cannot get released from the jail following the apex court order, Anti-Corruption Commission's lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily Star.

On May 18, the HC cancelled Samrat's bail granted by the lower court and also ordered him to surrender before the lower court concerned in seven days in connection with the case.

The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission on May 16 seeking cancellation of the bail granted to Samrat.

In the petition, the commission challenged the lower court order that granted bail to Samrat, one of the "casino kingpins" in Dhaka.

Citing the petition, ACC's lawyer Khurshid Alam told The Daily Star that the lower court concerned has granted bail to Samrat on medical grounds though he has been receiving treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).

On May 11, Judge Al Asad Md Asifuzzaman of Dhaka's Special Judge Court-6 granted ad-interim bail to Samrat in the case filed for siphoning off around Tk 222 crore and channelling it to casinos in Singapore and Malaysia between 2011 and 2018.

Samrat was released on bail on the same day after spending over two and a half years in jail in four cases after.
