Sued under DSA: Mohila Dal leader held in Rajbari

Police yesterday arrested an activist of Rajbari district unit Mohila Dal for making derogatory remarks on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Sonia Aktar Smrity, also the founder of Rajbari Blood Donors Club, was arrested from her home around midnight, said locals.

Samsul Arefin Chowdhury, science and technology affairs secretary of the Awami League's Mizanpur union unit, filed the case against Sonia.

According to the case statement, Sonia made provocative speeches against the prime minister and circulated those on social media.

"Sonia intentionally made and circulated false, fabricated, and defamatory speech on the prime minister to tarnish the goodwill of the prime minister," the case statement added.

Contacted, Mohammad Sahadat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Rajbari Sadar Police Station, said she was arrested for posting "insulting remarks" about the prime minister.

Meantime, Sonia's arrest drew flak from the netizens and her party leaders. They demanded immediate release of Sonia.

Former BNP lawmaker Ali Nawaz Mahmud Khayam said Sonia was arrested from her him around midnight. She has two children.

He too demanded her immediate and unconditional release.
