Woman sent to jail over Facebook post on PM in Rajbari

A Rajbari court today (October 5, 2022) sent a woman to jail after she was arrested early this morning over a Facebook post mocking Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The arrestee is Sonia Akhter Smriti, the founder president of Rajbari Blood Donors and a member of the district Mohila Dal, reports our Faridpur correspondent quoting Mohammad Shahadat Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rajbari Sadar Police Station.

Confirming the incident, Sonia's lawyer Taslim Ahmed Tapan said, "Police detained Sonia Akhter from her house around 1:30am. When she was produced before the court this afternoon, Senior Judicial Magistrate Kaisun Nahar Surma rejected her bail plea and sent her to jail."

Earlier on Monday evening, a local Awami League leader, Shamsul Arefin Chowdhury, lodged a written complaint with Rajbari Sadar Police Station over the Facebook post. The complaint was later recorded as a case.

According to the complaint, Sonia Akhter had posted the status on Facebook about a month ago.
