Gulf Air Workers Unions: Dismissal of Bahraini Workers without Notice Violates Trade Unions and Labor Law, Agreement between Union and Company

Bahrain Mirror: The Gulf Air Workers Union denounced the dismissal of Bahraini workers from Gulf Air.

The union confirmed in a statement that "these workers were laid off without notice or notification, and were treated inappropriately and disproportionately to the service of the majority of them, which spanned more than a decade, and without referring to workers' representatives and sitting with them in a negotiating meeting."

It pointed out that "failure to respond to the negotiation request is nothing but a clear marginalization of the union and a clear violation of the Trade Unions Law and the Labor Law, as well as the collective bargaining agreement concluded between the company's management and the Gulf Air Workers Union."

"Invoking restructuring or other reasons does not justify the dismissal process without consulting the workers' representatives in a negotiating process," it said, noting that "jobs in the aviation sector are limited and rare at the national level, and it is difficult that these dismissed be absorbed in other jobs."

The union was surprised that "the company began reducing national labor in light of the repeated statements of expansion," adding that "the strangest thing is that this layoff is compulsory without giving an opportunity for job rotation in the company."

"What's even more strange is that this dismissal takes place during the end of sessions of the Shura Council and the Council of Representatives."

The union called on Crown Prince and Prime Minister Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa to "intervene to stop the procedures initiated by the company's management until consensus solutions are reached between the management and the union."
