The installation of 32 Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in Labasa Town, will enhance the Fiji Police Force’s ability to monitor criminal activities.

In addition, business operators now feel more secure as they gear up for the festive season.

Commuters, pedestrians and consumers are able to walk freely and with more convenience knowing those cameras can be monitored by the Northern Command Centre.

Duavata Northern Crime Prevention Carnival committee chairperson Satish Kumar was thankful to sponsors, business communities and people of the Northern Division for contributing to their charity chest, which made it possible to replace old cameras and install latest new cameras

“The 13 cameras which were initially installed by the committee few years ago were damaged during Tropical Cyclone Yasa and Ana,” Mr Kumar said.

“Those still functioning gave up last year and so there was an urgency to get all cameras replaced.”

Over time the northern command center found it difficult to access those cameras, especially when robbery, break-in or theft happened in Labasa Town.

The total cost of the project is $50,000.

“We have not only installed cameras in the main town but also within the red zones and back streets where people allegedly carry out illegal activities such as drug dealing,” he said.

“We want our business communities and people to feel safe and we hope that through this initiative we can see reduction in crime.”

The future plan is to install cameras in Nasekula and at the industrial area.
