Tailevu Women Take Action to Safeguard Women and Girls

“The model of the project is quite unique and it would be a pilot for MSP on how we sensitise our communities, especially aimed at committing and preventing VAWG,” Ms Shaleen said.

Protect your women and children at all cost was the stern reminder from the Deputy Commissioner for Police Sakeo Raikaci.

He was addressing villagers at Qelekuro in Tailevu Province yesterday.

Ten villages in Tailevu have taken the first step to combat the global scourge of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG).

The villages are: Qelekuro, Nabulini, Manu, Dakuivuna, Sawakasa rua, Matacaucau, Naloto, Naikawaga, Naigani and Vunimono.

The theme for the event was “Empowering communities, ending violence – it’s my responsibility”.

The event to unite diverse stakeholders is aimed to protect and prevent women and girls against gender based violence.

While unveiling the pilot project Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya said VAWG knows no boundaries of geography, culture or socioeconomic status.

“It is a pervasive and deeply entrenched problem that must be confronted head on, and it is our collective responsibility to put an end to it,” she said.

“It affects women and girls of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life. We must end it before it starts.

“It is a silent pandemic that thrives in the shadows, hidden behind closed doors and perpetuated by fear and stigma. Education is a powerful tool in changing mindsets and challenging the status quo.

“Engaging men and boys as allies in this fight is crucial. Encouraging conversations about masculinity, consent and respect can help shift attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate violence.”

Medical Servicers Pacific (MSP) country director Ashna Shaleen said the project was possible through its grant partner the United Nations Trust Fund.

“The model of the project is quite unique and it would be a pilot for MSP on how we sensitise our communities, especially aimed at committing and preventing VAWG,” Ms Shaleen said.

“This shows how important it is to create a society where violence against women is not tolerated- not tolerated by neighbors, by people who have promised to uphold the law.”

DPC Raikaci said: “We must work together to combat violence against our women and children.”

The project is for three years.

Sawakasa (Rua) Village headman Jale Samuwai thanked MSP for choosing the 10 villages in Tailevu.

Encourage men to protect women

“The project will encourage the men in the 10 villages to protect our women and children. The pledge we took today shows our commitment,” Mr Samuwai said.

“I hope this is the first project of many that will be piloted in Tailevu. The latest stats revealed by the Ms Tabuya is an eye opener for us.

“Violence against women and girls is happening in a lot of families and most of the time it is not reported.

“This project will encourage us to speak up when someone is going through violence.”
