Shalend Singh wants to have fun and at the same time make an impact in the Vodafone Suva Open Tennis tournament, which got underway at Paradiso Restaurant and the Victoria Tennis courts today.
“A win is a bonus, I’m here to participate, be fit and enjoy the sport of tennis,” he said.
Singh is participating in the Over-45 above grade. He has recorded one win and a loss under his belt with two more games to be played.
“I normally play in Lautoka with the Lautoka Tennis Parents Association. We play for fun in the afternoon for recreation and to improve our health and exercise,” he said.
“I’ve been training at the Northern Club and Regional Tennis Centre in Nadovu.”
Singh urged children to play tennis as it is a good sport to play from an early age.
“For us unfortunately we took up tennis when we were already 45-years-old, and it is a fun sport to play,” he said.
“Tennis is very active in Suva, Nadi and Lautoka so we recommend that they get in touch with the Suva Tennis, Viti Tennis and Ace Academy. The coaches will guide our children or whoever wants to join tennis to becoming a professional player.”
The competition ends on Monday.
