The 2023 Kontiki Pineapple Cup began with a few upsets in the first round of competition at the Suva Bowling Club when previous winner, Samisoni Suluvati, lost his first game.

Speaking to SUNsport, Pineapple Cup tournament executive Ramesh Chand said there were 32 male and eight female bowlers who are participating in this year’s tournament.

“The men are divided into eight pools of four and the ladies are playing in an open roll,” Chand said.

The winner of the men’s category will receive $400 along with the Cup meanwhile the women’s winner will also take home a cup and $300.

“The runner- up, semi-finalists and the remaining four quarter-finalists will also receive cash prices,” he said.

Chand said about 20 bowlers participating in the tournament came from the west.

“The Pineapple Cup has been our blue-ribbon tournament since it has been in existence for more than 90 years,” he said.

“All the top bowlers vie for the Pineapple Cup as it is prestigious tournament under their sporting calendar.

Chand said a few new bowlers have turned up to participate and gain experience.

“This is all part of our development of the sport in the country,” he added.
